Killaloe & The River Shannon

At Dromoland Castle

Straddling the majestic River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river, the pretty towns of Killaloe and Ballina are linked by a handsome 13-arch bridge that connects the counties of Clare and Tipperary. Picture-perfect and friendly, Killaloe, on the western bank of Lough Derg, was the birthplace of Brian Boru, the fierce High King whose ancestors built Dromoland Castle. It’s a charming town to explore, mirrored by Ballina on the eastern bank, with its excellent pubs and restaurants. The old canal bank, disused railway line and narrow streets make these twin towns a lovely place to explore by foot and the starting point for a scenic drive along Lough Derg.
