Ferns
The damp shady floor of a deciduous woodland is an ideal habitat for ferns. Though hard to spot in Winter, their fronds uncurl in Spring to form a feathery summer carpet. Typical woodland species include Buckler Hand Shield Fern, Soft Shield fern, Male fern, Lady Fern and Hart’s Tongue.
Look at the trunks & branches of different trees in a forest and you will discover that bark surface is often covered with mosses and lichens.
