The main Castle at Dromoland was built by the 4th Baronet of Dromoland, Sir Edward II, a grandson of Sir Lucius O’Brien. In the early 1820s, Sir Edward II invited English Architects, the Pain Brothers to submit some designs for the Castle. The brothers submitted some classical designs but Sir Edward chose one of their John Nash inspired neo-gothic designs.
James and George Richard Pain had been pupils of John Nash who famously designed Marble Arch & Buckingham Palace.
Work on the high Gothic-styled dark blue limestone walled Castle began around 1822 and cost of cutting and hauling the stone from the nearby quarry on the Dromoland Estate was more than £80,000 Irish punts, a huge amount in Georgian times.
Sir Edward II had married well and it is believed that his wife Charlotte Smiths inherited wealth was probably essential in covering the construction costs for their new castle.
The building was completed in 1835.
The designers - Samuel Lewis writing in 1837 described Dromoland as:
"A superb edifice in the castellated style, lately erected on the site of the ancient mansion, and surrounded by an extensive and richly wooded demesne, in which great improvements have recently been made".

Did you know that we have a 200 year old “Monterey Cypress” tree – our “Macracarpa” proudly standing over 45 meters tall in the middle of the 18th fairway at Dromoland Castle Golf Club?
At first sight, it seems strange that trees normally only found on the Monterey Peninsula in California, a place of hot, dry summer, should grow in cool damp Ireland.
But as they say, “the proof is in the pudding” and over the centuries our tall, imposing tree has survived many battles, raging storms and bolts of lightning. However, today it has another battle on its “branches” as it once again becomes the nemesis for many of our golfers as they take on the 18th green and return to our rich fairways.
Over the last four months, we have spread over 1,000 tonnes of sand on our course and more than 5,500 hours of hard work has gone in to pruning, hollow coring and improving our course in preparation for this very day, to swing back our Castle gates and welcome back our golfers.

What better way to mark #𝐸𝑎𝑟𝑡ℎ𝐷𝑎𝑦 than by celebrating the promotion of our own Arek Gduliński, to a new full-time position on Dromoland Estate as 𝑆𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑂𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑒𝑟.
The creation of this role marks an exciting new chapter in our green journey, as we carve out the future of the estate that we call home, creating moments of happiness in harmony with nature, for guests and colleagues alike.
Today we held our first Sustainability Summit of 2021, welcoming our team to join us virtually as we discussed the next steps in our sustainable journey.

Did you know we have three bee boles built into the east facing wall of our Walled Gardens? 🐝🍯
A bee bole is a cavity or alcove in a wall or a separate free-standing structure set against a wall (the Scots word 'bole' means a recess in a wall). A skep, or straw beehive, was placed inside the bee bole. Before the development of modern bee hives bee boles were a practical way of keeping bees, although most beekeepers kept their skeps in the open covered by, for example, old pots, or sacking. The bee bole helped to keep the wind and rain away from the skep and the bees living inside. The ultimate purpose of a bee skep was to house bees so that honey could be obtained; however, they were often also used to ensure pollination of fruit trees, etc. This explains why bee boles are frequently found in walled and flower gardens belonging to country houses such as Dromoland. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were the heyday of bee bole construction, and the shapes of old bee boles can be seen in walls on large country house estates throughout Ireland and Britain.

Many of you will have had the pleasure of meeting Marie Chawke, our Director of Business Development and a key member of Dromoland Castle since 2017.
Energetic, hard working and much-loved, on August 26th 2020 Marie was diagnosed with Stage Three hormone cancer. Determined to weather the storm with her upbeat attitude, she began a course of fortnightly chemotherapy that ran from September through to December 17th. “Keeping a good positive frame of mind was key,” Marie explains. “I always felt and told myself that I was going to get better and had my wonderful team of doctors telling me I was going to get better.” Marie acknowledges that she was also surrounded by an incredible support network of family, friends and colleagues.
This Friday, Marie reaches an important milestone as she completes her final radiotherapy session. The whole Dromoland Castle family is so proud of our fearless friend and colleague, as expressed by our General Manager, Mark Nolan. “Marie, you have dealt with your illness with grace, poise and that great determination and zest for life that you show at every opportunity. We are fortunate to have you as one of our most valued members of the team and are very grateful for all you do for us. As you round the last hurdle, we will celebrate together as we all get back to doing what we do best. Keep well and thank you.”
