Meet Alex!

Alex joined Dromoland Castle 8 years ago as assistant sommelier. Hailing from the city of Nantes in the Loire region, he is now head bartender and mixologist extraordinaire. But how did he end up in Ireland? “I did an advanced bartender course in France and one of my teachers used to work in Ireland. He asked if anyone was interested in working there, and a few of us sent our CVs. Dromoland Castle came back to me and I started working here in September 2013.”

Working on Dromoland’s Tarot Card Cocktails has been a career highlight, where Alex got to experiment with new ideas and products. “I learned a little about the history of tarot reading and its origins. Each card is tied to Dromoland Castle, so I had to do a lot of research on Dromoland’s history too. The whole experience was very enriching.”
Alex is excitedly working on Dromoland’s next cocktail book, which will focus on old Irish myths and legends. Every few weeks a different cocktail from the book will be showcased in the cocktail bar.

So, most importantly, what is Alex’s favourite cocktail? “Currently my favourite classic cocktail is the old fashioned, a lovely whiskey drink and one of our most popular. From the Tarot book, I love the Emperor, a beautiful smoked whiskey and brandy cocktail.”
